Dialogue A:

A: Hi, Max! I didn’t expect to see you here.

B: Why are you so surprised?

A: I thought you’re more interested in paintings and sculptures, not books.

B: Well, I can’t say I’m a keen reader but I do read books from time to time. As for this moment, I need a book about Lewis Carroll.

A: Why?

B: Yesterday I was at an exhibition where the pictures and the drawings of English writers were displayed. Carroll was among them.

A: Не is a very interesting personality. You can use the electronic catalogue over there if you want to find information about him.

Dialogue B:

A: Look, how are they going to steal the painting?

B: I have no idea, but they need to invent some very clever method to do it. The picture is guarded very thoroughly.

A: It’s supposed to be a comedy, isn’t it? So far, it looks more like a detective story.

B: It will probably turn into comedy later. I read the reviews. They said the film is really funny.

A: OK, let’s see how it all will end up. Could you pass me the popcorn?

Dialogue C:

A: What do you think we’re going to paint today?

B: We have no idea.

A: Nothing. Because today we’ll be looking at the pictures of the most famous artists of the nineteenth century, and I will present to you some facts from their biographies. Some of them were not only painters but scientist, musicians, important public figures.

B: If I had known earlier, I wouldn’t have brought all these oils and paints with me today.

Dialogue D:

A: Hello, can I help you? Are you looking for something in particular?

B: Yes, I need to buy a birthday present for my sister.

A: How old is your sister, and what is she interested in?

B: She’s only six, and she likes a lot of different things.

A: Can she read?

B: Yes, but she prefers to listen to someone reading to her.

A: I wouldn’t recommend a book. Probably a set of painting brushes would be a better idea.

B: Oh, yes. She likes drawing, and she will certainly like a present like this.

Speaker A: I have to travel a lot because of my job. I’ve seen the most beautiful cities in the world, but I’m always happy to get back home. Home is the best place in the world because all my family are here. My town is a lovely and quiet place where every stone in the pavement looks very familiar. The same is true about the people. We all have known each other for ages, and it’s very comforting. Another reason for why I would never move away from my town is its historical charm. Its architecture is beautiful. When I wander along its streets, I imagine myself walking in a medieval town.

Speaker B: My native city is not very popular with tourists, but when we have visitors, they never leave feeling disappointed with the place. There are lot of things to see and do. If you are planning a short visit, you should definitely start your exploration of the town with the historical centre. Number two in your programme should be our university. It was built in the seventeenth century, and it’s even more beautiful on the inside than the outside. Every Sunday and Wednesday there are guided excursions.

Speaker C: No, the technological museum is not the best choice, I’m afraid. I had an excursion there last Sunday and have to say it was a waste of time. There’s nothing interesting there. The museum is poorly equipped. The working models, that are supposed to work, do not work, and the whole place looks dusty and neglected. If I were you, I would chose some other place to spend your day off.

Speaker D: I enjoy exploring the surroundings around our city. I go by bicycle because it’s the only way to get to the remote places most of the city dwellers don’t know about. Bicycle rides are more fun when we go as a group. Fortunately, some of my friends share my interest. Last Sunday we found the remnants of an ancient church. We felt like real explorers, and it was great.

Speaker E: Look, I’ve always wanted to see your country, but you know how busy I am all the time. To realize my dream I seem to have to plan my holiday well beforehand. When do you think I should come to see as much as possible? I prefer it to be neither too cold nor too hot, and I don’t want it to be high season: I don’t like crowds. And the most important thing, my trip should fit your plans because it would be great if you could give me some of your time to be my guide and to show me the most interesting places.

Allan: What are you doing, Cathy? You look so focused.

Cathy: Please, don’t distract me. I’m buying tickets online. OK, that’s it. Done! What were you saying, Allan?

Allan: I hope the tickets you’ve just bought aren’t for this Saturday.

Cathy: They are. We are going to the musical theatre with my mum. But why?

Allan: Just because I was going to ask you to support our athletic team. It’s the regional competition.

Cathy: Sorry, but the tickets are already bought. It’s the musical “The Little Mermaid” about a princess who lives at the bottom of the see.

Allan: Huh, it must be very romantic.

Cathy: Don’t criticize my taste, please. I never criticize you for watching comedies, do I?

Allan: Right, old comedies are my favourite. I adore their sense of humour. The thrillers and action films they make nowadays can’t compare to the good old stuff.

Cathy: Fine, and what else are you planning to do at this weekend apart from running and jumping at the stadium?

Allan: I won’t have much free time this weekend unfortunately. First is the competition, and then I‘ll be writing an essay in French. Knowing my skills in foreign languages, you can guess how long it will take — Ages.

Cathy: Don’t exaggerate.

Allan: I’m not exaggerating. It’s easier for me to do five tests in math than one essay.

Cathy: But you have no choice, and what are you supposed to write about?

Allan: A historical person, I mean, a person whose influence to development of the society has left his name in history. I haven’t made my mind up yet. Some famous war hero, probably.

Cathy: If you talk about the development of society, it should be a scientist, not a military person. At least I think so.

Allan: Yeah?

Cathy: I mean that it’s the scientists, who make society go further. I’ve seen absolutely amazing photos of the machines and devices we use now paired with photos of the things people used in the past. It’s such a great contrast! Just imagine the tools doctors use to diagnose and treat their patients two hundred years ago and the smart lasers neurosurgeons use to carry out operations on brain, heart, or whatever now.

Allan: Yes.

Cathy: Or take communication technology. What did that look like two hundred years ago?

Allan: Pens, paper, and the people who deliver the letters.

Cathy: That’s it. Now computer technology in communication has changed the world. And space exploration?

Allan: Okay, Okay, I agree, but where did you see those photos?

Cathy: It was an exhibition arranged by the technological faculty of our university. They displayed the photos in the avenue opposite the university. It was a free exhibition, and anyone could see it.

Allan: Could see? Do you mean it’s closed already?

Cathy: Yes, it lasted only a few days and closed the day before yesterday. I was lucky to see it because I do a language course in the university and passed by that alley.

Allan: What language course? Isn’t the French, we have to learn at school, enough for you?

Cathy: No, I enjoy learning languages, and I’ve taking a course in Portuguese.

Allan: Gosh! Why not Japanese?

Cathy: Japanese is an unrealistic goal. I’ve never even fancied learning it, but Portuguese is not difficult at all, and my grandmother comes from Brazil.

Allan: I didn’t know that. Why didn’t she teach you Portuguese?

Cathy: Though she doesn’t speak it herself. Her parent left the country when she was small. They lived in France, Germany, and at last settled down here.

Allan: There’s a similar situation with my dad. My dad has polish roots, but he’s never been to Poland. We’re going to take a trip to Warsaw this summer altogether as a whole family.

Cathy: I’m sure it will be interesting, though I don’t know much about that country.
