Dialogue A:
A: It’s great to see each other again, isn’t it?
B: Yes, it’s great. But it’s sad that we don’t get together as often as we used to. Now we only see each other on special occasions.
A: Yes, that’s right. I remember how often we had fun here in Harry’s house when we were kids. But, life is life. You gave Harry a great present, by the way. Where did you buy it? I’ve been looking for something similar for a long time.
B: No, I won’t tell you. But, if you like it, I can give it to you as a present too.
A: That’s too kind of you! But, well, thank you.
Dialogue B:
A: Are you looking for something special?
B: Yes. I need a present for my former teacher.
A: For your teacher?
B: Yes. She’s retired, but she was our favorite teacher when were at school. It’s her birthday this Sunday, and we want to visit her.
A: Yes, I understand. How about this vase? It looks impressive, but it’s very expensive.
B: I don’t think it will do, anyway, not her style. I’m considering this set of classical English novels, and the price is okay. What do you think?
Dialogue C:
A: And can you tell me what you ate yesterday?
B: Yesterday? Oh, it was a very busy day, and I skipped lunch.
A: And your breakfast?
B: I don’t usually eat it. I don’t have enough time for it in the morning. But I had an enormous dinner yesterday.
A: Did you?
B: It was at my friend’s birthday. We had a huge cake with cream and nuts. I was very hungry by the evening, and I had three servings of it.
A: No wonder you complain of stomachache and dizziness. Let me take your blood pressure, and then I’ll write out a prescription.
Dialogue D:
A: It’s great that you are here, too. I usually have to commute alone.
B: Yeah, I usually take a bus to the city, but today it’s so foggy. I think it’s safer to go by train.
A: It is, and it’s faster. No traffic jams.
B: Right. I need to be in the city by nine o’clock.
A: You will be. Look! Our train is coming. Let me help you with your luggage.
B: Oh, thank you! It’s a birthday present for my niece. She’s turning six today.
Ответы:
A – 3: At a birthday party
B – 2: In a shopping centre

Speaker A: I believe that it is not very difficult to learn a foreign language. Some students are able to communicate in a new language only a few weeks after they start to learn it. There are certainly mistakes. They often pronounce the words in a wrong way, and confuse the words. Grammar mistakes are a natural thing for any language learner – especially in the verb forms and tenses.
Speaker B: I have to say that I find learning languages very difficult, but nevertheless, I want to speak at least two or three foreign languages. It is necessary in today’s world, where people travel a lot and communicate across the countries. It’s very good for a successful business if you are able to work with foreign partners, and know their language and culture. And it’s really great to be able to read books and watch films in the original.
Speaker C: I want to speak foreign languages, but I find the process of learning very boring. I hate all these grammar rules and monotonous exercises. If anyone knows any other way to learn a language quickly, and how to make it a bit more exciting, please let me know. I also have a problem with new words. I learn them and forget them at once. Please help!
Speaker D: Some people say they find it difficult to learn foreign words and grammar. From my experience, I can say that listening to songs is a great way. You remember the lyrics very easily. And, I also read books. Even when I don’t understand everything, it’s not a problem. The main thing is to understand the general meaning, and I often guess the meaning of the new words from the context.
Speaker E: Most people agree that foreign language skills are very important. It would be great if we were able to speak ten languages. But, people usually choose one or two languages to learn. The first choice is certainly English. Most students, whose mother tongue is not English, choose it because it is the common language in different spheres – business, science, education, politics. And another reason is that English is an easy language to learn. It’s much easier than say…Chinese or Russian.

Allan: Hi. Are you going to swim?
Linda: Yes, I am.
Allan: It’s not a very good idea, believe me.
Linda: Why? It’s warm, and the water is still warm too.
Allan: Right, but it’s October now, the middle of Australian spring. And in the spring, we have jellyfish here — small, but poisonous. Their bite can be very painful and even dangerous.
Linda: Oh.
Allan: You are a new person here, aren’t you? I’ve seen you several times near the green cottage on the pine road.
Linda: Yes, it’s our new house. I’ve moved to Australia from Canada. My dad got a job here, and we had to move – dad, my twin sister, and me.
Allan: I see.
Linda: Mum and my younger brother will arrive later, in the summer. In December, I mean. Oh, it sounds so strange — in the summer in December.
Allan: Yeah. In Australia, everything is upside down. I’m Allan, by the way. I live in the white and grey house, right opposite yours.
Linda: Oh, it’s nice to meet you, Allan. I’m Linda.
Allan: Welcome to Australia. What school have you enrolled in?
Linda: We haven’t chosen the school, yet. Dad says he needs some time to find out which is better for us. He wants all three of us to start the same school. But it means that the school needs to meet our interests. I’m keen on music, my sister likes mathematics, and our little brother loves football.
Allan: Oh, there are lots of schools with good football teams. The sport is popular everywhere.
Linda: Do you do it too?
Allan: No, I prefer watersports. Surfing is my favorite — in any weather. Well, almost in any weather.
Linda: I’ve never tried it. Actually I don’t do any sport at all, except for some jogging, but very occasionally. I want to be a musician, and musicians don’t need to be very athletic, do they?
Allan: I don’t know. They probably don’t.
Linda: Ideally, I wish I could focus only on music lessons. But unfortunately, I have to do science, mathematics, and all the others as well. And it takes so much time and effort.
Allan: I understand your feelings, but we all need to complete the school course.
Linda: Right.
Allan: And for me, an ideal job is a job related to sports. A coach for a children’s surfing team, for example — a surfing instructor.
Linda: I see. You like freedom.
Allan: I do, but my parents want me to study economics and to run our family business after I graduate. We run a couple of small family inns in the town.
Linda: It must be a good business. There are lots of tourists on the coast.
Allan: Yes, but I find the hotel business a bit boring. Look, I think you and your family could drop in someday. My parents will be glad to meet new people, and I’ll show you and your sister my pet.
Linda: Is it a kangaroo?
Allan: Oh, no. It’s a false stereotype that all Australian families keep kangaroos. Here, like everywhere, dogs and cats are the most popular pets.
Linda: Which of them do you have?
Allan: Neither. We have a large parrot — a white cockatoo.
Linda: I’ve only seen a cockatoo in pictures.
Allan: Then you’ll have an opportunity to see a live one.
